Atleast 14 people Killed And 40 Others Injured Over Land Dispute In Jonglei

4th March 2011 – (Jonglei) – At least 14 people have been killed and 40 others wounded on Thursday in Wangulei payam, Twic East county of Jonglei state over a land dispute.

Speaking to S-R-S on Friday from Bor, the governor of Jonglei state Kuol Manyang Kuol said the situation is now calm in the area.

[Kuol Manyang]: “There was inter-tribal clashes yesterday in Wangulei Payam Twic East County in which 13 people lost their lives plus 1 S-P-L-A soldier who was within the force that was engaging the two parties. The total of 14 people died and around 40 people wounded, but the situation is now under control because the S-P-L-A soldiers are there with the police. In the other parts of the state, the situation is normal. It is over land, dispute that’s between Dachueek community and Ayual communities, the wounded have been evacuated in some area in Paliau and others are in Panyagor who also needs evacuation.”

Governor Kuol further urged the public to report disputes other than engage in conflicts adding that such disputes should not be extend to other areas.

[Kuol Manyang]: “People should report to the court rather than taking the law into their hands, I am also appealing to our people in Wangule payam not to escalate this conflict so that they don’t go and harm themselves in far places like Nimule, in Kenya and other places. They should leave it to the authorities who are capable of managing that situation.”
