The Dachueek And Ayual Clans In Jonglei Wrangles Over Land Dispute

8th March 2011 – (Nairobi) –The Dachueek and Ayual clans in Twic East County of Jonglei state are wrangling over ownership of the Wangulei payam which is about to become a strategic town.

Last Friday the clash between the two clans left at least 15 dead and 40 others wounded. Although, the payam is inhabited by three clans, only two are involved.

Speaking to Sudan Radio Service in Nairobi on Tuesday, Reverend John Dau said that the three clans have had peaceful co-existence for many years until last week.

[Rev John Dau]: “There is nothing actually in it. Apart from the historical name having been in a central place for the three clans for a long time. And now people are seeing that very soon it may come up as a very strategic central town particularly with the growth of modern facilities. And the fact that Wangulei is situated between Bor and Malakal possibly where a highway would pass by near Wangulei. So people see that it will be a very strategic place. Agriculturally nobody grows anything in Wangulei.”

Reverend Dau urged the two communities to seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
