Disarm Civilians For Peace To Prevails, Urges Civil Society
15 February 2011 – (Lainya) – The secretary-general of the coalition of civil society organizations is calling for the disarmament of civilians to reduce rampant killings in southern Sudan.
Speaking to SRS from Lainya, Central Equatoria state on Monday, Mr. Lokulenge Lole said the presence of arms in the hands of civilians is a threat to regional peace.
[Lokulenge Lole]: “Arms are still in the hands of many people, they are handled by civilians, and they are handled by even young people. So, all these guns that are rampant ought to be collected because insecurity is still going on because of these. You know people become unnecessarily brave when they have guns otherwise one will not take a risk of declaring war on a brother or a sister. Definitely these are a threat to peace and security.”
Lole said the only way to resolve disputes is through the use of dialogue.
He insisted that it is the duty of both the government and the civil society organizations to sensitize citizens on non-violent ways of resolving conflicts.
