International Women's Day Not Celebrated Much In Conflict Regions

7th March 2011 – (Khartoum) –Women in regions experiencing conflict say they have little to celebrate about the 100th anniversary of the international women’s day.

The head of the Abyei Women’s Association, Elizabeth Nyanaut Mayen says women suffer the most in Abyei because of the conflict in the region.

She spoke to SRS by phone from Khartoum on Monday.

[Elizabeth Nyanout]: “My concern about women’s suffering and the children especially in the areas where there are problems like Abyei, is that although some efforts have been made in the past years, I feel that there is still a lot to be done for women and girls especially in conflict areas like Abyei. Such areas like Abyei and other places that have instability in Sudan, women are the people who are suffering more than anyone else. ”

Nyanaut added that NGO’s in Abyei must put in a lot of effort to assist solve the current insecurity in the area.

International Women's Day is marked on every 8th of March each year by women's groups around the world to celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women.
