22 February 2011 – (Juba) – According to Central Equatoria state traffic police over speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs are the major causes of road accidents in the state.

The head of the criminal division and field in the state traffic police administration Lieutenant Colonel Abraham Simon Makwaj spoke to 98.6 SRS FM on Monday in Juba.

[Colonel Abraham Makwaj]: “Generally the causes of road accidents include; over speeding, be it within or outside the town, people do not seem to respect the speeding laws. For example within the town, motorists are supposed to do thirty to forty kilometers per hour, while outside the town and in the highways for example, one is supposed to do sixty to ninety kilometers per hour. Reason number two which is also one of the main causes of accidents, is the fact that we have a lot of motorist who drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and this mostly happens during weekends particularly at night.”

Lieutenant Colonel Makwaj urged motorists and pedestrians in Central Equatoria state to respect and abide by traffic rules to reduce the rate of road accidents in the state.
