New Nation To be To Join World Bank

1st March 2011 – (Juba) –The would be new Republic of South Sudan says it seeks to be a member of the world bank.

Speaking to SRS on Tuesday in Juba, the GOSS minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Deng Athorbei explains why it is important to join the World Bank.

[Deng Athorbei] “It is important for southern Sudan to join the world bank because being a member; you become part of the International Monetary System. And also the World Bank sometimes gives loans to developing countries. We shall benefit from the loans from the world bank and even in capacity building of our institutions.

Athorbei went on to describe the processes involved

[Deng Athorbei] “Application takes a long process. We have to apply first to be members of the International Monetary Fund. Once we are members of IMF then we can become a member of the world bank. So, we are still in the process. We are going to apply the day we lower the flag of northern Sudan and we raise our flag.”
