Nile Basin Initiative Says Entebbe Agreement Ready For Endorsement
8th March 2011 – (Juba) –The Nile Basin Initiative or NBI says that the Entebbe agreement on the sharing of the Nile Basin water and resources is ready for endorsement.
The announcement came after Burundi became the sixth riparian country to sign the Entebbe-Agreement.
The Entebbe-Agreement calls for the Nile Basin countries to modify the old pact and re-allocate the shares of water to the rest of the countries other than Egypt and Sudan.
The agreement was signed last year by Ethiopia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya. Congo is yet to sign the agreement as it promised.
However, the Entebbe agreement is opposed by Egypt and Sudan, who receive the lion’s share of the Nile River water and resources.
The Nile Basin is made up of ten countries including Sudan, Egypt, Eritrea, Kenya, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.
