Nine Drown And Hundreds Homeless In Darfur
20 July 2010 - (Darfur) – Nine people drowned in Darfur when they were crossing the Wadi Garaa River in Kass town in southern Darfur on Saturday.
The head of chiefs of Kass, Mohamed Abdurrahman told SRS on Monday that the nine were returning from Jemeza market on the other side of the river before they met their death.
[Mohamed Abdurrahman]: “What happened is that, these people went to Jemeza market. When they returned they got Wadai River full of water that was at 9:00 p.m. They didn’t wait because they were in a hurry. Several people entered the river and most of the people came out safe but some of them were taken by the stream, they died. We buried them yesterday at 9:00 a.m. inside Kass.”
He added that the stream later on boosted out and destroyed a whole village of 500 houses leaving people in bad situation
[Mohamed Abdurrahman]: “After that the water from the River entered Dora village. It destroyed the whole village. Yesterday nobody ate or drank tea in the whole village, because the river powerfully flowed into Dora village destroying all houses; more than 500 houses. Now families are sitting outside, they came to Kass, some of them went outside the village. Now this is the situation.”
