Refugees In Egypt Ask For Help In Egypt

17 February 2011 – (Cairo) – Refugees in Egypt are asking the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, UNHCR to provide them with security following the recent Egyptian uprising.

The refugees from Sudan, Somalia, Iraq, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Djibouti, were demonstrating in front of the UNHCR offices in Cairo.

The official spokesperson of the Sudanese refugees in Egypt Abdul Salam Abdul Mullah spoke to SRS on Wednesday from Cairo.

[Abdul Salam Abdul Mullah]: “When we went to the commissioner’s office during the time when Egypt was going through the uprising and the dismissal of the president. We were in dilemma. Egypt was no longer a safe country for us. We requested the UNHCR to look into our case by settling us or directing us to any other country. It is known internationally that, if there is insecurity in a particular country, UNHCR is supposed to transfer its refugees to other safe countries, and that was simply our demand. Unfortunately, UNHCR didn’t listen to us. On top of that there was also great chaos. Sudanese, Ethiopians, Eritrea’s and people from Djibouti were angered and they clashed with the Egyptian police.”

That was the spokesperson of the Sudanese refugees in Cairo speaking to SRS.
