SSRC Says It May Extend Registration Period Due To Technical Reasons
22 November 2010 – (Khartoum) – The Southern Sudan Referendum Commission says the voter registration period may be extended for technical reasons.
The commission’s Secretary-General, Ambassador Mohamed Osman El- Nujumi spoke to the press in Khartoum on Sunday.
[Mohamed El-Nujumi]: “We will see maybe in some places we will need to do so especially outside the country and if we found that in some places there are many mistakes and where people were prevented from registering. If it happens that big numbers do register before the time people start going to court, we may need to extend the period of operations for one or two more days. We are a bit flexible in dealing with many things and we are flexible to the extent that we do not violate the law.”
Ambassador El-Nujumi further said that there is still poor turnout by voters at the different centers in the north and the SSRC cannot establish the total numbers of people who have registered so far.
