Starvation Looming In Eastern Equatoria State

7th March 2011 – (Torit) –Thousands of people in Eastern Equatoria State are being faced with starvation that hit the state since February.

Eastern Equatoria state governor, Luis Lobong Lojore said that the situation has reached its worst stage and is appealing to NGO’S to assist the government with food to supply to the most vulnerable counties in the state.

Speaking to SRS from Torit Mr. Lobong explains.

[Luis Long]: “The hunger situation in Eastern Equatoria state is very high and so many people are suffering, especially in the far east of Kapoeta County where people are badly affected, we have raised this issue to the N-G-OS and the government of southern Sudan, but we haven’t gotten any response from them and we the state government cannot do much because we unable to respond to the needs of thousands of people who are sleeping with hunger and so we will continue to do our best and the media to advocate for us.”

The acute absence of rain in the region from late last year has hampered subsistence farming coupled by the hiking of food prices in the markets of southern Sudan.
