Sudanese In Egypt Suffer Due To Protests
11 February 2011 (Cairo)– As the Egypt protests get into the third week, many citizens are now facing challenges including getting food.
Most citizens have not been able to go for their daily duties as the rioters have caused chaos all over the country.
The situation is reportedly worsening for foreigners especially those who are casual laborers such as Sudanese citizens in Cairo and other surrounding towns.
SRS correspondent in Cairo Samir Bol has more on the story.
[Samir Bol]: “One thing which I can say is that there is harassment, and this harassment is from the citizens themselves. Because when the police withdrew then the citizens took over the security, and they started looking for foreigners including Sudanese nationals. So this is the challenges facing Sudanese. The citizens who are Egyptians, who are not good people, pretend as security people and they use the chance to take money from the Sudanese. I got some information that Sudanese who are refugees went to the UNHCR to demonstrate because of the harassment and the Egyptians now want to chase them out of their houses, because before the chaos they used to work on daily basis to get money to pay the rent but since the chaos started, no one is working and so there is no money even to pay rent.”
Egyptians have been protesting for the last three weeks against President Hosni Mubarak’s rule.
On Thursday, President Mubarak declared on National Television that he will not step down until September late this year.
